What education should be everywhere

Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary level and fundamental stages.

Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall further the activities of the United Nations for the maintenance of peace."

Kofi Annan, Secretary-General, United Nations:

"The more the people know their rights, and the more they respect those of others, the better the chance that they will live together in peace. Only when people are educated about human rights can we hope to prevent human rights violations, and thus prevent conflict as well."

Eleanore Roosevelt:

"Where after all do human rigths begin? In small places, close to home, so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere."
